The One LP Experience

One LP is a unique critically acclaimed portraiture photography project which explores the inspirational qualities of recordings and the impact they have on peoples’ lives. This groundbreaking series has captured the imagination of artists and audiences by encouraging them to talk about and reflect on recordings that have had a profound influence on their lives. Originally created by William Ellis as a jazz photography project that focused on documenting recordings that have inspired leading contemporay jazz artists. The project’s universal appeal meant it has evolved and been expanded since then, not only to embrace people working in other aspects of the arts and culture but also to capture the excitement and experiences of audiences, listeners and fans alike.One LP is not only as a stunning display of location-based portrait photography, chronicling peoples’ personal relationship to recordings as a mode of storytelling, but also works as a commentary about identity and community.William Ellis’ photographs have been exhibited in cities around the world and received critical acclaim from fans, artists and writers. One LP: The Experience 

The Experience is a tour-ready rendering of the One LP project. It is offered as a bespoke art event that can be assembled from a range of components, and has been designed to appeal to arts, music, and literary organisations in the private, public and community sectors. It is also available to clients educational settings. 

The Experience is based on an exhibition of One LP portraits and transcribed interviews: the exhibition can be complemented with a range of activities comprising individual One LP portrait and interview sessions. Presentations, seminars, methodology and practitioner workshops, and discussions relating to technical aspects of portrait and music photography (the latter for small groups or individuals).  

Any or all options are available - see what the team at iconic jazz club Ronnie Scott's in London selected as their One LP. 

Further and unique components available by discussion - for example, One LP sessions with delegates as a stimulus for group engagement and reflection.

The Experience can be set-up in galleries, theatres and arts spaces, but is also designed for roll-out into colleges, work places, ‘pop up’ shows, festivals and outdoor events.  

One LP: The Journey so far

The world-premiere exhibition for One LP was held in New York at the ARChive of Contemporary Music in September 2014, and was featured in Time Out. The project was subsequently exhibited at BritWeek in Los Angeles in May 2015. QR codes were used to link directly to the artist's interview on the One LP site via a free smart phone app. Visitors were inspired to consider and talk about their own One LP. 

The project’s originator, William Ellis is a world renowned music photographer whose works have been exhibited in key cultural centres and prestigious arts venues across the world. William’s images are held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
